  • A study of Illocutionary Acts in "The Proposal" Film

    Abstraksi

    A STUDY OF ILLOCUTIONARY ACTS IN “THE PROPOSAL” FILM ABSTRACT This study concerns with the phenomena of types and functions of illocutionary acts used by the main characters in “The Proposal” film. It is intended to (1) identify the types of illocutionary acts which are found in the utterance in “The Proposal” film”; (2) identify the functions of illocutionary act which are found in “The Proposal” film; (3) identify the most frequent function of illocutionary acts that appears in “The Proposal” film. This study uses qualitative method. The data was collected by watching and writing the utterance the main characters in “The Proposal” film. The data analyzed is done based on Searle theory of the types of illocutionary acts and function of illocutionary acts. Based on the data analysis, it is found that all types of illocutionary acts occur in the utterances produced by Margaret and Andrew in “The Proposal” film. Seventeen or equal with 45, 9 % is directive. Eight or equal with 21, 6% is expressive. Five or equal with 13, 5% is representative. Four or equal with 10, 8%is commisive. Three or equal with 8, 1% is declarative. The result shows that the functions of illocutionary acts found in the Margaret’s and Andrew’s utterances are request, refusal, warning, recommendation, and complaint. As many as to utterances or equal with 37, 1 % is request, seven or equal with 20 % is refusal. There are have the same score, Five or equal with 14, 2% is warning and the other 14, 2% is thanking, four or equal with 11, 4% is complaint, one or equal with 2, 8 % is recommendation. This study has revealed that the most functions often used are request. Most of the utterances produced by the main characters are request as well.
